The term sexual orientation refers to the gender to which a person is attracted. Broadly speaking there are three main types of sexual orientation:
Lesbian or Gay – being attracted to members of the same sex
Bisexual – being attracted to both women and men (though not necessarily at the same time)
Heterosexual – being attracted to members of the opposite sex
However, having feelings towards people of the same or opposite sex does not necessarily mean that a person identifies with a particular type of sexual orientation. For example, a person may have sexual experiences with both women and men without identifying as bisexual.
It can be useful for health professionals to be aware of a person’s sexual orientation in order for them to provide relevant care, advice and information. Staff within sexual health clinics may ask you about your sexual partners as part of the consultations. Share this information if you feel comfortable as it should mean that you receive a service that is better for you.
Transgender, or simply ‘trans’, refers to a person’s gender identity. A trans person identifies themselves as a different gender to the sex they were assigned at birth. Trans does not suggest any specific form of sexual orientation and trans people may identify as heterosexual, lesbian, gay or bisexual.
